The kiddos have been home for about 10 days now. (For more info, visit here.) It’s been a wonderful, exhausting, stressful, happy whirlwind. They’re just so awesome. We’ve been so awesomely blessed. And when one or both of the little boogers can’t quite settle down, I like to sing them this song I wrote just for them. It’s doesn’t always soothe the savage baby, but it reminds dad of what’s truly important.

A Father’s Prayer

Hush now there my baby
Hush now there my son
These are the first words I have to say
Now that your life’s begun

May you always walk with purpose
May your steps always be strong
And may you always know you have a home here
No matter where you roam

And when the shadows block your view
A light of love will guide you through
That’s what I give to you

Hush now there my daughter
Hush now little one
These are the first words I have to say
Now that your life’s begun

May your dreams always be greater
Than what others think is wise
May you always look upon this world
With wonder in your eyes

When the rain rolls down on you
May it wash you bright as new
That’s what I pray for you

Hey there now my beauty
Hey there now my love
Though our life before was true and pure
I feel it’s just begun
May the days that wait before us
Be so much sweeter than what’s gone
And may love abound inside our house
Until our days are done

But if joy ever sheds its bloom
Just remember why we do what we do
It’ll pull us through

I am no one special
I am just an ordinary man
But I’ll work and I’ll fight
To be worthy of the right
To be called your dad

Hush now there my daughter
Hush now there my son
These are the first words I have to say
Now that your lives have begun

May your hearts always be open
May your deeds always be kind
And may what you know down in your soul
Be reflected in your eyes

And remember these words of truth
There’s no power under sun or moon
That can keep my love from you
